Dr. Mirta M. MartinDr. Mirta M. Martin serves as Dean of the School of Business and Professor of Management at Virginia State University. Dr. Martin holds a baccalaureate degree in psychology, political science and French from Duke University; a master of business administration (MBA) degree from the University of Richmond; and a doctorate with an emphasis on strategic management and leadership from Virginia Commonwealth University. Born in Havana, Cuba, and an immigrant to the United States, Dr. Martin is fluent in four foreign languages.

Guest for June 23: Dr. Jeffries

Dr. Jeffries is an associate professor of African American history and holds a joint appointment with the Kirwan Institute and the Department of History. Dr. Jeffries specializes in twentieth century African American history and has an expertise in the Civil Rights-Black Power Movement. His current book project investigates the African American Freedom Struggle in Lowndes County, Alabama, which gave birth in 1966 to the Lowndes County Freedom Party, an all Black, independent, political party that was also the original Black Panther Party.

 

Dr. Jeffries will discuss the Black Church and Politics, why Blacks vote strongly for democrats and other political issues.

Major General Jeffrey S. Buchanan, Director for Strategic Effects, J9, United States Forces-Iraq in Baghdad, Iraq. Major General Buchanan coordinates and implements political, economic and communications activities on behalf of USF-I. Major General Buchanan also serves as the USF-I spokesman. Major General Buchanan is a graduate of the University of Arizona and the US Military Academy.

Michael BlakeBlake worked on the Obama for America campaign, first as Deputy Political Director and Constituency Outreach Director in Iowa and as Deputy Director and Political Director in Michigan. Prior to that, Blake was the Director of External Affairs for the Michigan House of Representatives serving in Michigan Speaker of the House Andy Dillon’s cabinet. Before that appointment, Blake successfully co-organized three state house campaigns in the 2006 election cycle. Blake is a graduate of the Medill School of Journalism from Northwestern University.
