Received his B.A. in history from Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia in 1994, his M.A. in American history from Duke University in Durham, North Carolina in 1997, and his Ph.D. in twentieth century American history from Duke University in 2002. He is the author of the newly released BLOODY LOWNDES: CIVIL RIGHTS AND BLACK POWER IN ALABAMA’S BLACK BELT (New York University Press, 2009). BLOODY LOWNDES tells the remarkable story of the local people and SNCC organizers who ushered in the Black Power era by transforming rural Lowndes County, Alabama.
Dr. Elizabeth Prodromou, a religious freedom expert, will discuss bills in numerous states that have been introduced with the intention of ‘banning’ Shariah – and why, though maybe well-intentioned, such measures are ill-advised and have the potential to backfire. Dr. Prodromou is the Assistant Professor of International Relations. (BA, Tufts University; MALD, Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy; SM and PhD, Massachusetts Institute of Technology).
Miller is a five-time Emmy award winner for his critically acclaimed half-hour, live talk show “Dennis Miller Live” which had a nine year run on HBO. He was the host and executive producer of CNBC’s “Dennis Miller”, a topical interview talk show featuring reasoned discourse, opinion and humor. Additionally, Miller has appeared on many politically oriented television talk shows.
Professor Tobias will discuss President Obama’s judicial appointments and the impact on the system. In a recent Associate Press interview Prof. Tobias stated, “It’s really amazing,” said Carl Tobias, a law professor at the University of Richmond who wrote about the increasing diversity on the federal bench during Obama’s administration in an article in the Washington University Law Review. “Obama has nominated as many as were sitting on the bench when he was inaugurated.”
